Today when I was trying to close some frozen application on my Mac, I was confused how to close it. Many Mac users like me must be having this same problem whenever they are trying to close frozen applications. So I decided to write a post for them on this topic.

 In Windows pc we use Ctrl Alt Del key to close frozen applications, but what about Mac. Which key we need to press in Mac in order to execute the same function? Why can’t we make that something similar to Windows because we have a tendency to press Ctrl Alt Del on our Windows pc? How to press Ctrl Alt Del on Mac? How to close frozen applications on Mac? How to force quit an application on Mac?

How to press Ctrl Alt Delete? - The Mac Style.

Mac has a different style to close frozen applications. In Mac also we have three keys to close an application like we do in Windows pc and they are Command, Option and Esc key. Follow these simple steps to close an application in Mac style.

1.You have to open Force Quit application in Mac by pressing the Command, Option, Esc key. Another method of opening the Force Quit dialog box is to click on the Apple menu in the top left and select Force Quit.

2. Select the frozen application from the list which you want to close and click Force Quit button on the bottom right and Mac will close the application forcibly.

This is the Mac style of closing a frozen application which is not responding. 

Now many of you are familiar with Windows pc. In order to close a frozen application in pc we use Ctrl Alt Del, but what if I say we can do the same with Mac too in a similar style instead of pressing the Command, Option, Esc key.

Yes, now you can make your Mac experience pc friendly by switching functions of Command key and Control key as I have mentioned below. By implementing these steps Ctrl key on your Mac will work like a Ctrl key on PC.

How to Force Quit an application on Mac? - The PC Friendly Style.

Follow these steps as mentioned below to force quit an application on Mac in a pc friendly style:-

1. Click Apple menu in the top left corner.

2. Click on System Preferences…


3. When System preferences... open, click keyboard icon to open keyboard settings.

4. Go to Keyboard tab and click Modifier keys... button as shown below in the bottom right.


5. After clicking on Modifier Keys... a pop up window will open which lets you modify the key as per your preferences.

Select Command from the drop down menu next to Control (^) Key as shown below.

6. Click OK to save.

After saving your preferences the new short cut keys which you need to press to force quit a frozen application will be Control, Option and Escape.

This will give you a PC-friendly experience and the Control key in Mac will work in a same way like it used to do in a Windows PC.

So here I have explained all the ways by which you can use Ctrl Alt Del function of pc in a Mac. You can either use the Mac style which I have explained above or you can customize or change the settings as per your preferences in the second method which I have shown you above.
