How to fix USB ports not working Device Not Recognized Windows 10/8/7

Nowadays all latest computers and laptops have USB ports. We depend on these USB ports to attach our mouse, keyboard, pen drive, printers, speakers, etc devices. But sometimes it happens that these devices don’t get properly attached to these USB ports.

I use a USB hub for my laptop because I have so many USB devices to attach and there are only few ports in the laptop. So what I do is, I connect all my devices to this USB hub and use it. But sometimes it happens that some of the device doesn’t work properly.

Based on your Windows Operating system you have, you can get the following pop up message as shown in the image below.

Normally people use their direct USB ports of laptop or pc to connect their USB devices. Most of the times it happens when you plug in a USB device to your Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 computer or laptop you may get an error which says "USB Device Not Recognized". There is nothing to worry over here as this can be resolved easily.

If your usb ports are not working on your windows 10 pc, then you can fix this by some troubleshooting methods as mentioned below in my guide. Go through the entire post to check what's the problem with your usb ports.

USB Device Not Recognized in Windows 10/8/7 - Error Types in Different OS.

In this post I am going to share all such methods which will let you know how to fix USB Device not recognized error in Windows 10/8/7.

Following are the methods by which you can resolve this issue.

Restart your Computer

First we will try with the simplest and the easiest method, i.e. to restart our computer. Mostly problem gets resolved with this method. Try to restart your computer. Normally it happens that a simple reboot could solve the problem without wasting your valuable time.

Unplug your USB device with which you are having the problem, restart your pc or laptop. After restarting your pc plug in back the USB device to see if it’s working properly or not. If it works, great, your problem is resolved. If it doesn’t then try other methods mentioned below.

Update your Device Driver

Windows are unable to recognize the device mostly because sometimes the device drivers are not updated. So we can use this method to update the device driver. For updating the device driver we need to open Device manager and this can be done by pressing Windows + R key on your keyboard. A run box will appear. Type devmgmt.msc as shown below in the image and press Enter key.

The Device Manager of your computer will open as shown below. If your USB device is not recognized you will see it as Unknown Device as shown in the image below. Right click on Unknown Device, click on Properties, click Driver tab and then click on Update Driver.

This is the method to update the driver automatically through Windows, if this doesn’t work then you may also try to download the driver of your device directly from the manufacturer’s website.  Mostly pen drives and other flash drive don’t have a driver issue. But if you are trying to install a USB printer or scanner, then there are chances that driver might not work, so in that case it is better to download it from the manufacturer website itself as they have updated drivers.

How to fix USB Device not Recognized in Windows 10 with USB Root Hub Method?

Open Device Manager as we have shown above by pressing the Windows + R key, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. Expand USB Serial Bus controllers, right click on USB Root Hub and then click on Properties. You will get USB Root Hub Properties window as shown in the image below.

Click on Power Management and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This is to be done for all USB Root Hubs listed on your Device manager. This might help to resolve your problem.

Remove USB Hub and Connect directly to your Computer or Laptop

My computer just has 2 USB ports due to which I was having problems connecting all my USB devices such as mouse, keyboard, printer, my iPhone, etc. So I have got a USB hub with 6 ports to connect all my devices easily. If you are also using a USB hub like me, then try unplugging the USB hub and connect your USB device directly to your laptop or computer. In most cases due to loose connectivity in USB hub the USB device is not recognized. So better try connecting directly to your computer or laptop. Buy the best USB Hub for your PC. I am sure that this help you to connect your device and it will be recognized.

USB ports not working in Windows 10 - Update Generic USB Hub Driver

If your Usb ports are not working on your Windows 10 pc and you are still getting Unknown Device error in your Device Manager, then what you can do is you can open the Device Manager again by pressing the Windows + R key and type devmgmt.msc in the Run box.

Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and then right click on Generic USB Hub. Then click on Properties, then click on Driver tab as shown in the image. Then click on Update Driver, then click on Search automatically for updated drivers software as shown in the image above.

For this you will require an internet connection. If there are any updates it will automatically download the updated driver software and your problem will get resolved.

Try Uninstalling USB Devices and Reinstalling again

Try to uninstall all USB devices from your pc and then restart the computer. For that again you will have to open Device manager by pressing Windows + R key and type devmgmt.msc in the Run box.
 Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, uninstall all Unknown device with exclamation marks as shown below in the image.

After uninstallation process is over, restart your computer and then again try installing these devices. In most cases this method works and the device get installed easily after the uninstallation process.
