Top 9 Most asked Vmware Interview Questions & Answers

This list contains some of the most important interview question and answers which will help you to answer VMware related questions of the interviewer confidently.

What is VMware?

VMware Inc. is a company which provides cloud computing and virtualization software and services. It was founded in 1998 by Diane Greene, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Ellen Wang and Edouard Bugnion. Its headquarter is based in Palo Alto, California, USA.

VMware has an enterprise software hypervisors, VMware ESX and ESXi, a bare-metal hypervisor which runs on hardware of the server without need of an operating system.

What are the benefits of using VMware?

By using VMware we can benefit in several ways. Some of the benefits of using VMwre are as follows:-
  1. We can create multiple applications and run multiple operating system on a single computer machine.
  2. We can use all hardware resources for multiple operating system to get higher productivity with fewer sever and resources.
  3. It speed up and accelerates the deployment of new application which saves time.
  4. We can save 70% of total cost on IT infrastructures, etc.
  5. It allow us to manage IT functions in a simpler and an easier way.
  6. You can install Mac OS X on Windows 10 using VMware.

What is VMkernel?

VMkernel acts as an interface between virtual machine and physical hardware of the system. Vmkernel is used by VMware ESX host.

It is responsible to allocate memory, schedule CPU and to provide services such as vMotion, NFS, Fault tolerance and other hardware concepts and services related to operating system.

By using a standard vSwitch we can configure VMkernel port on Esx server.

What is Hypervisor?

Hypervisor is also known virtual machine monitor (VMM). It is a software which creates and runs virtual machine. It allows us to share single hardware host with multiple operating system. It controls the host processor and resources.

A computer that has a hypervisor which runs on one or more virtual machine can be called as host machine and under that host there are several virtual machines which can be called as guest machines.

There are two types of Hypervisor, Type 1 and Type 2.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Hypervisors?

Type 1 Hypervisor also called as Bare Metal Hypervisor or Embedded / Native Hypervisor. It is an easy to install software which doesn't use system resources. It is used to manage several resources or applications installed on an operating system. It's main task is to share and manage hardware resources between different operating systems.

Examples of Type 1 Hypervisor: VMware ESXi Server, Citrix Server, Xen Server, Microsoft Hyper-V.

Type 2 Hypervisor also called as Hosted Hypervisor. These types of Hypervisor depends on host operating systems for their operations. These types of hypervisors are installed on an operating system which then supports other operating system above it.

Examples of Type 2 Hypervisor: Oracle Virtual Box, VMware Workstation, Microsoft Virtual PC

Explain Fault Tolerance in VMware?

Fault tolerance is an important component of VMware VSphere which provides continuous availability of virtual machines. It creates a secondary virtual machine which replaces the primary virtual machine in the event of any fault. That’s why it’s called Fault Tolerance component of VMware.

What are the types of virtualization?

The different types of virtualizations are:-
  1. Server Virtualization
  2. Application Virtualization
  3. Presentation Virtualization
  4. Network Virtualization
  5. Storage Virtualization

What is Clone and Template in VMware?

Clone is a duplicate copy of virtual machine which can be created when the Virtual Machine (VM) is powered on. We cannot convert back a Cloned Virtual Machine. Cloning is of two types, they are full clone and linked clone.

A full clone is a copy of virtual machine which is not dependent on anything and it does not shares anything with the parent virtual machine after the cloning operation is done. Linked clones share disk space with its parent Virtual machine.

Template is the master copy of a virtual machine which can be used to create several clones or copies of other virtual machines.. It can be converted back to Virtual machine to update base templates. It is a more secure way of  preserving a virtual machine.

Whenever we power on the virtual machine, it cannot convert virtual machine to template, but at the same time it can convert a clone to a template.

How does Virtual Machine communicate from one server to another server?

Virtual machine connects to other Virtual machines from one server to another server using a VMware virtual switch which is also called as vSwitch. This switches are responsible to connect other virtual machines to a virtual network.

vSwitch uses a physical NICs which are associated with a host sever to connect to the virtual network to a physical network. These switches are also called as up-link adapters. To interface with the vSwitch, these up-link adapter uses virtual objects called virtual network adapters.
