Why my iPhone 7/6s/5s won't charge/not charging when plugged in

Apple iPhones are the most popular and best selling smartphones all over the world. The slim design, unique technology and superb performance of iPhone are the main reasons people opt for it.

But still iPhones are not fault free. They might have some problem or the other at some point of time like some manufacturer defect or like you might have been using it for a long time and now it is showing some battery problem, not charging, etc.

Today I will explain one such problem in this article about why my iPhone 7/6s/5s wont charge when plugged in.

In my earlier article I have mentioned about how to delete internet browsing history on your iPhone. Now I will show you how to fix iPhone not charging problem.

How to fix my iPhone 7/6s/5s that won't charge when plugged in?

You might be surprised to see that your iPhone is not charging and looking for methods to resolve this issue. There are several method to resolve this issue.

You can follow any of the following method to resolve this issue and fix your iPhone problem that won't get charged:-

Method 1: Check Charging Cable and USB Adapter of your iPhone for damages.

First we will go with basic steps which is to check your charging cable and USB adapter. This is one common reason your iPhone won't charge. Follow these steps mentioned below to resolve this issue:-

1. Check your charging cable and adapter for damages such as burns due to electricity, wire breakages or bent prongs.

2. If you discover any such damages, then resolve this first because a damage cable won't charge your iPhone.

3. Don't use a damage charging cable and usb adapter and buy a new one for you. You can easily get one at Amazon.

4. Another reason some iPhone are not charging because people go for a poor quality, cheap usb cable to save money. So always go for Apple brand usb charging cable.

Method 2: Check charging port of your iPhone for dust, debris, etc.

Another great method is to check for dust, debris in your iPhone charging. This is also one common reason that your iPhone is not charging.

Many times it happens that this dust or debris prevent charging your iPhone properly. So follow these steps as mentioned below to fix this:-

1. Check your charging port carefully with a torch or flashlight for dust, debris or any item that is obstructing charging. 

2. These are tiny particles of rock or some dust that got stuck in the charging port and preventing your iPhone to get charged.
3. Due to this you will not be able to fit your charging cable to your iPhone ports.

4. So what you can do is you can use a sharp toothpick, a compass point to remove it. Alternatively you can also use the point of a pen to remove those stuck dust or debris from the charging port.

5. Don't use a pencil to remove the dust or debris because the nib of the pencil may broke inside and the charging port may get further damaged due to this.

Method 3: Change the Power Socket/Wall Outlet/USB ports of Laptop or PC

Follow these steps if you have a problem with your power socket or wall outlet. If you are charging your iPhone through your laptop or PC, then also this method is useful for you:-

1. Your iPhone won't charge properly because of a faulty power socket or a faulty wall outlet wherever you are plugging it in.

2. Some it happens that the wall outlet is not working properly or the power socket becomes faulty, so changing the power socket work. Try using a different wall power outlet.

3. Some people have a habit of charging their iPhone directly from their Mac, PC or laptop USB ports. 

If you are also the one who is doing this then I would recommend you to try changing the USB ports of your laptop because sometimes the USB port has a problem and it doesn’t works properly.

In that case you can try using another USB port of your laptop, Mac or PC and it will work for you.

Method 4: Force restart your iPhone 7 Plus/6s/5s  device that won't charge

Try doing a force restart of your iPhone 7 Plus/6s/5s or earlier versions. Follow the steps given below as per your device:-

For iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus users:

1. Press and hold the Power (Sleep/Wake) button and Volume Down button of your iPhone for 10 seconds.

2. Keep holding both these buttons at the same time for 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo on your iPhone screen.

3. When you see the Apple logo on the screen, release both the buttons.

For iPhone 6, 6s, 5, 5c, 5s & earlier versions, iPad, iPod Touch users:

1. Press and hold the Power (Sleep/Wake) button and Home button of your iPhone at the same time for 10 seconds.

2. Keep holding both these buttons for minimum 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo on your iPhone screen.

3. Release the buttons when you see the Apple logo on your iPhone screen.

If your iPhone is charging then there is nothing to do except to wait till it gets fully charged. If it's not charging then follow other methods of this article.

Method 5: Reset your iPhone to Factory Settings

This is the next method if your iPhone won't charge. If you iPhone is still not charging and you are unsuccessful with the above 4 methods, then you can try resetting your iPhone to Factory settings. 

Follow these steps mentioned below to do a complete reset of your iPhone to factory settings:-

1. First take a backup of all your files of your iPhone device. Connect it to your pc or laptop and take back up copy on iTunes. You can also take a back up through iCloud.

2. Now you have to reset the iPhone, go to Settings  then tap on General, then tap on Reset.

3. In Reset menu, tap on Erase all contents and Settings.

4. iPhone will prompt your for a confirmation if you want to rest your device to factory settings.

5. Here you have to confirm that you want to reset your device to factory settings.

6. Once you are done with the confirmation, the factory reset process will begin on your iPhone.

7. When your are done with factory reset process on your iPhone, try charging your device again by connecting the power cable.

8. Let your device charge for at least half an hour.

9. After half an hour try restarting your iPhone. Follow method 4 given above.

Method 6: Contact Apple Support Team

If you have followed all the methods above and none of them worked for you and your iPhone won't charge or power on yet, then the last resort for you is to contact Apple Support Team.

Alternatively you can take your device along with your charging cable and adapter to your nearest Apple Retail Store. If your device is under warranty then there is nothing to worry as the Apple Technical Team will repair it for you.

But if your warranty has expired then the Customer Support Team is well equipped with lots of information about the problem. Just tell them more about your problem and they will try to resolve the issue from their side.
