What is Hyper-V?

Hyper-V formerly named as 'Viridian' is a hypervisor based technology on which multiple virtual machines can run. The Hypervisor layer controls the hardware and allocates the resources to each virtual machine's operating system. It is a virtualization platform which is included in Windows Server 2008.

What are the prerequisites to install Hyper-V?

In addition to system requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2 a 64-bit system with hardware assisted virtualization enabled and Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a prerequisite to install Hyper-V.

What is Hypervisor?

Hypervisor also known as Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) is responsible to create and run virtual machines. A hypervisors which runs one or more virtual machines on a computer is called as host machine and the virtual machines are called as the guest machines.

Hypervisor is the core of the virtualization platform. There are two types of Hypervisors. They are Type 1 Hypervisor and Type 2 Hypervisor.

Give Example of Type 1 and Type 2 Hypervisors?

For Server Virtualization we can use VMware ESX Server, Microsoft Hyper V, KVM, Citrix/Xen Server, etc.

For Desktop Virtualization we can use VMware Workstation, Virtual Box, Microsoft Virtual PC, VMware Fusion for Mac, Parallels Desktop for Mac, etc.

How to enable Hyper-V on Windows 10?

To enable Hyper-V in Windows 10 you have to follow these steps:-

1. Type powershell in the search box next to Windows menu.

2. Right click Windows Powershell. A menu will appear click on Run as Administrator.

3. Once the Windows Powershell get started type the following command and press Enter:-

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-v -All

You have to wait for some time, once it's done you have to restart your system by typing Y and pressing Enter. After system restart Hyper-V will be enabled on Windows 10.

How do you access Hyper-V?

To access Hyper-V you have to go to Server Manager and install Hyper-V role. One Hyper-V role is enable, Hyper-V Manager is visible as Administrative Tools.
